Includes predominantly cartes-de-visite and circa 200 cabinet cards. U.S. photographers dominate the collection, although work of photographers from several other countries--including Canada, Great Britain, Sweden, Austria, and Switzerland--is also represented. Consists largely of individual and family portraits, but also includes some scenic views, Civil War images, and political personalities.

William Culp Darrah was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, 12 January 1909. He obtained the degree of Bachelor of Science at the University of Pittsburgh in 1931. During the two years following he was a fellow of the Carnegie Museum, and from 1934 to 1942 an instructor in the division of Biology at Harvard and research curator of paleobotany at the Harvard Botanical Museum.
